CATAWBA TRADITION. In her commitment to creating quality work and her insistence that her fellow potters and students share that commitment, Georgia Harris helped transform Catawba pottery from utilitarian vessels that became trade- and later tourist- ware into works of art recognized by scholars and art collectors. Folklorist Henry Glassie has defined tradition as “the creation of the future out of the past.” In this regard, Georgia Harris’s work is quite traditional, for in her art we find the past, present, and the future of the Catawba people.
