About Us at Medford Library

USC Lancaster is proud of its library facility, staff, and services. Medford Library primarily serves the students and faculty of USC Lancaster and is also open to the public, high-school age and above. Named for J. W. Medford, the Library at USC Lancaster was opened to students in the fall of 1974. The library houses over 80,000 volumes and is scheduled to be in a fully new facility by April of 2003.

Meet the staff. Medford Library's staff is experienced and helpful. The front desk is the library's reference desk as well as circulation desk. Students should approach the staff member at the front desk whenever they have questions or need help.

Circulation. Circulation, in library terms, means the checking out of books and other materials to library users.

Circulation to Students. A new student should have his/her USC Lancaster ID card barcoded at the Library at the time of registration. Then, present it at the front desk when ready to check out books. If a student has a barcoded ID from last year, the library barcode is still valid and does not need to be re-validated. Students must bring their barcoded ID's with them to the library in order to check out materials, and the person checking out the book must be the person pictured on the ID.

Circulation to the Community. Barcoded library cards are available free at the Library's circulation desk for non-students, high school age and above, who want to check out library materials as community patrons. They, too, must have the card in their possession and present it at the front desk in order to check out materials.

Further in this tutorial, read about your opportunities available within the Library Online Catalog to check your personal circulation account and even renew books online!

Fines. Library users who do not return or renew library materials on or before the due date accumulate overdue fines on their library records. More importantly, library users with overdue materials may not check out any more books until the overdue materials are returned. Fines accrue for each book overdue and for each day overdue, at the rate of .25 per day per book. Due dates are always stamped in the back of the checked out materials, so please return them promptly.

Replacement cost for a lost book is a minimum of $35 plus the amount of any overdue fines. Any student having overdue materials or unpaid fines will see that amount added to any future bills issued by the University of South Carolina. Holds on any future registration for courses within the University of South Carolina System may also apply.
