Summer College Intern

Description:

The City of Lancaster is looking for college interns to work during the summer for ten (10) weeks, (May 27th – August 4th).

Interested college students need to complete and return an application package to the Human Resources Department at City Hall no later than Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

This package may be picked up from the reception desk at City Hall (216 S. Catawba St.) between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

We will again select five (5) interns through random drawing.

Requirements:

Students must be actively enrolled in an accredited college.  Actively enrolled shall be defined as taking a course load of at least 12 semester hours

Students must have either a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) or a letter of recommendation from their Faculty Advisor or Dean.

Students who reside, or whose parents reside, within the city limits of the City of Lancaster will be given first priority in the selection process.

Students must complete a City of Lancaster Application for Employment prior to being considered for an intern position and will be subject to the following background checks: Criminal History (SLED), Driving History, and Drug Test.

Student interns will be compensated at a rate of $7.25 per hour.

Programs Intern/Marketing Intern/Events Intern

Gaston Farm Rd Equestrian Center

Description: 

Use knowledge, skills and abilities learned through business coursework to drive program efforts at Gaston Farm Equestrian Center, including but not limited to:

  • Establishing contacts throughout the region to promote our Center and the services we offer
  • Updating the email distribution list with new program and creating new lists as needed
  • Making recommendations for improvements to current programs and services
  • Recommending creative means of advertising new programs
  • Updating Facebook and Twitter as well as other social networking sites
  • Performing other duties directly related to the specific type of internship

 

Requirements: 

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor or Associate's degree and must be a current student during the internship
  • Right candidate will have good writing skills, attention to detail and proficiency with computers & the internet
  • Must have a go-getter attitude and be a self-starter
  • Experience or interest in horses is a plus

Volunteer Coordinator Intern

Description: 

Use knowledge, skills and abilities learned through college coursework to manage a quality volunteer program at Gaston Farm Equestrian Center, including but not limited to:

  • Present Gaston Farm Rd Equestrian Center to colleges and local community organizations, student groups, etc. to obtain volunteers and promote special events
  • Identify volunteer projects through needs assessments and ongoing communication with staff members
  • Research relevant community organizations to coordinate additional volunteer opportunities
  • Maintain volunteer schedule and list of events using Microsoft Outlook
  • Communicate regularly with volunteers through check-in phone calls, e-mails, etc.
  • Track volunteer hours using Microsoft Excel
  • Manage feedback from staff and share feedback with volunteers to improve future volunteer activities

 

Requirements: 

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor or Associate's degree and must be a current student during the internship
  • Right candidate will have good interpersonal skills, attention to detail and proficiency with computers & the internet; experience with Microsoft Outlook a plus
  • Must be enthusiastic, have a go-getter attitude and be a self starter
  • Experience with or interest in horses is a plus
  • Must demonstrate experience in leadership role (in class is acceptable)
  • Experience recruiting, training, and supporting groups of people is a plus

Assist with planning and implementing two Major Fund-raising events

A.      Create and distribute fliers for local schools, churches, and other places in the community

B.      Create and  display large posters for the event

C.       Assist with securing donations from small businesses for the silent auction

D.       Assist with marketing  the events

E.       Assist with recruiting volunteers for the events

Assist with obtaining company sponsorship via local small businesses to reimburse for business expenses.

Assist with smaller monthly fundraising events

A.      Piggy Bank contests: help to distribute Piggy banks to small businesses as well as collect from them monthly

B.      Help promote the “restaurant of the month”

C.      Approach the area middle schools and high schools to hold dances for fundraising event

Assist with e-mails and phone calls as directed to help organize and secure ongoing fund-raising activities
