Lady Lancers
Complete First Season
In the fall semester of 2007, a new tradition was born at USC
Lancaster. The Women's Lancers Soccer program was unveiled
and participated in Region X with the National Junior College Athletic
Association.
The soccer team is coached by Sal Estrada who is pleased with
the outcome of the season. "I was excited to be coaching
at the college level the sport that has been part of my life, and
to have a great group of players. I have coached some of
the players previously at Lancaster High School, and it was nice
to see them and to coach them one more time. I am thankful
for the support that I have received from Dean Catalano, our Athletic
Director Rick Walters, the USCL staff, and Frank Overcash, Director
of the Lancaster County Parks and Recreation Department. They
have made our first season a very pleasant one and we all have
enjoyed this unique experience." Estrada said.
The Women's Lancers Soccer team played against established programs,
who also praised the Lancers effort and dedication to the sport. Even
though being a new and young team, the Lancers were able to improve
their level of playing in a short time. "We had a couple
of close matches and toward the end of the season the team played
solid matches, leaving us with a good feeling for future seasons." Coach
Estrada added.
The Lancers were able to play at the 2007 Carolinas Junior College
tournament held in Wilmington, North Carolina on October 26, 2007. The
Women's Lancers fell short against USC Salkehatchie 2-0. During
the tournament, a coaches meeting was held to select the All Region
team, All American nominees, Region X Coach of the Year, and other
deserving accolades for the year. Allison Haile was nominated
for the 1st Team All-Region, Bonnie Creighton and Jess Cooney were
nominated for the 2nd Team All Region. Kayla Brill was
selected for Honorable Mention. Coach Estrada was nominated
for Region X Coach of the Year as well.
Overall, the Women's Lancer Soccer Team did a great job playing
at the college level. "We all are happy to have another athletic
program at USC Lancaster. The Women's Lancer Soccer Team played
and represented our school in a professional manner. We are
glad that we had a serious-injury free season. To be a first
year program and to have Coach Estrada nominated for Coach of the
Year is a good sign that we are doing things right." USCL
Athletic Director Rick Walters commented. |
