LANCERS TAKE 4TH in BREVARD, N.C.
Trevor Banks Finishes 2nd

Stellar play by freshman Trevor Banks has enabled the USCL Golf Team to reach new heights in their performances this fall.  Trevor’s (73 & 71) 144 score at Glen Cannon Country Club in Brevard, North Carolina enabled the Lancers to finish 4th in the Montreat Fall Invitational. “The most impressive fact is that Trevor is 2 under par for his first two collegiate tournaments,” said Rick Walters, Lancers coach.  “Trevor led all scores at the earlier Fall Challenge on September 4th with a 2 under par score of 70.  His goal is to be under par for all of our fall events.  I’m sure he can reach this goal as he works extremely hard.”

USCL was only 11 shots off the lead as Brevard College won the more recent event.  Zack Lindsey of Reinhardt College, in Atlanta, shot a 2 under score of 142.  USCL’s total was 604 and Brevard was at 593.  The Lancers made a 4 shot improvement from day one.

Other Lancers scores were:  Taylor Banks 147 (74 & 73), Will Riggins, 152 (77 & 75), Kevin McGinnis 162 (80 & 81), and Ridge Alford 163 (82 & 81).

“Trevor is getting a lot of help from his teammates,” said Walters.  His brother, Taylor, finished 7th in the event.  Will Riggins also had a good tournament as he finished in the top third,” said Walters.

“Being a Division I member of the NJCAA means our competition has picked up.  All participants in the event were NJCAA or NAIA Schools.  This gives our players a chance to show these schools their talents.  It will help them in continuing their education while they play golf for two more years,” said Walters.

The Lancers will continue their play in Spartanburg on October 4th in the Spartanburg Methodist College Invitational at the Links O’ Tryon.

Lancers Win Fall Challenge

The USCL Golf Team got off to a good start in the 2009 season by shooting a 1 over par 289 score and winning the Fall Challenge. The event was held on Friday September 4th at the Edgewater Golf Course in Lancaster. Teams from Tri-County Technical College, Spartanburg Methodist College, and USC Lancaster participated in the event. Each school fielded two teams and several individuals for a total of 36 players. USCL took top honors with a team score of 289 followed by Spartanburg Methodist with a score of 296. TCTC rounded out the finishing order with a score of 323.

USCL’s Trevor Banks led the field in individual scoring with a 2 under par 70. He was joined by teammates Will Riggins and Taylor Banks who shot a respectful even par 72, Kevin McGinnis (75), and Ridge Alford (76).

“This is the best score we have had in USCL Golf,” said Lancer golf coach Rick Walters. “We have been after this trophy for four years. Our guys worked extremely hard to get this win. I am extremely proud of the way they have practiced the last several weeks, “said Walters.

USCL’s Gold Team consisted of Mike Burch (78), Zane Rollins (84), Russ Faile (82), CJ Hinson (78), and Drew Bragg(75). The Gold Team totaled 322. Individuals representing USCL with notable scores were; Tim Wilson (78), JR Thomason (77), Corey Moore (85), and Walt Poston (90).

“We are off to a good start in part to our player’s hard work, but also due to the assistance of Ron Burke, who helps with the USCL team. Mr. Burke with his 25 years of PGA experience has helped to raise USCL golf to a new level. We greatly appreciate his assistance,” said Walters.

The Lancers travel to Brevard, NC for the Montreat College Invitational on September 14th and 15th. The annual event will host NCAA Division II teams from throughout the Carolinas.
