SYLLABI REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL FACULTY
M. Ron Cox,
Ph.D., Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs
The office of the Vice
Provost for Regional Campuses and Continuing Education and
other agencies require that a syllabus be on file in the office
of the Associate Dean of Academic
and Student Affairs for EACH COURSE AND EACH SECTION,
(for example, if you are teaching more than one section of a course
then we need a copy for each section).
The University's "Center
for Teaching Excellence" has assembled a web
page with "sample
learning outcomes" in various academic disciplines which
you might find useful in constructing your syllabi (which need
to specify "learning outcomes" instead of "course
goals" for purposes of our upcoming SACS accreditation). The
site is located at http://kudzu.ipr.sc.edu/effectiveness/outcomes.htm.
Other helpful information for constructing syllabi is found at
http://www.ipr.sc.edu/effectiveness/syllabus.htm and http://www.ipr.sc.edu/effectiveness/sampsyll.htm
The syllabus should
contain:
• Class meeting schedule
• Course outline/objectives
• Instructor name, office location, office hours
• Textbook used (when appropriate)
• How grades will be computed including the number and
type of tests and other
assignments
• Grading scale
• General Education Goals
*For purpose of the SACS reaccreditation, you should also include
how your class addresses the “General Education Goals” of
the campus.
In addition, if your attendance policy differs from the policy
in the USC
Lancaster Bulletin, that information should be placed in your
syllabus.
Syllabi for classes are due in the Office
of Academic and Student Affairs on or before the first
day of classes.
