CREATIVE COMPETITIONS

GENERAL INFORMATION
Students must meet the guidelines set forth by each individual competition.  Winners of the various competitions will receive a $300 scholarship ($150 per semester).  Ribbons will also be awarded.  The judges can decide not to award a first place prize.



THE COMPETITIONS

ART
Enter the Art Competition and see how your work compares to that of other student artists.  Bring your art clearly marked with your name and school to Hubbard Hall reception area at USCL on or before February 15, 2008.  Submit pieces of art in advance to allow time for judging and displaying the exhibit.  Please pick up your work immediately before lunch on Honors Day.  If you have questions, please contact Professor Fran Gardner at 803-313-7045 or email her at fgardner@gwm.sc.edu.

CREATIVE WRITING
Enter your short stories and/or poems for competition.  You may enter only one story.  Stories must be typed and double-spaced.  There is a three poem minimum to enter the poetry competition.  Each poem must be typed on a separate page.  You may enter both the story and the poetry competitions.  Separate prizes will be awarded for both short stories and poetry if there are 5 or more submissions per category.  Dr. Bruce Nims, English professor and current interim dean of academic and student affairs, will judge the competition.  Stories or poems must be at USCL on or before Feb. 15, 2008.  Mail entries to Honors Day Writing Competition, Attention Bruce Nims, USCL, PO Box 889, Lancaster, SC 29721. MUSIC
Show off your musical talent in the Music Competition.  Only solo performances are allowed, 3-5 minutes in length.  You may enter the vocal competition, the instrumental competition, or both.  No group performances are allowed.  Vocalists must provide their own accompaniment.  Instrumentalists must provide their own equipment and instruments other than the piano, which will be provided.  Separate awards will be given for the winning vocal and instrumental performances at the judges' discretion.  Judges for this event will be Dr. Bruce Nims of our English faculty and another qualified judge.  You can contact Dr. Nims at 803-313-7047or bnims@gwm.sc.edu if you have any questions.
